Ultimate software layout tutorial http://www.webdesignsbybrian.com/ultimate-software-layout-tutorial-2/ http://www.webdesignsbybrian.com/ultimate-software-layout-tutorial-2/#comments Tue, 16 Nov 2010 17:46:54 +0000 admin http://www.webdesignsbybrian.com/ultimate-software-layout-tutorial-2/ In this tutorial you will learn how to create a clean a sleek software layout. This layout can be used also as a business layout where you can show case your projects or present your business ideas. Bellow you can see the final result.

26 Final result software layout1 590x643

Before you start creating this layout i suggest you to download the following image on your computer
This background was made for this tutorial, and you can download it for free from the following link:

Download background image

We will create a seamless pattern from this small pice of image.
Open the background.jpg image in photoshop, and then go to Edit > Define Pattern. Choose a name for this pattern and then click on OK
After you create this nice seamless pattern, please close the document and create a new document.

I will use the PSD framework from:

Ultimate CSS Framework

The reason i will use the PSD file is because soon all these layout will be converted soon into valid css/xhtml websites using our Framework.
If you don’t have the Ultimate CSS Framework yet, you can create a document with the following sizes:

1100 pixel – width
1200 pixels height

These values are not so important. However i recommend you to create documents bigger than 940 pixels ( for width ). This website width will fill 99 %  from all screen resolutions.
Now let’s start working on this software layout or business layout.

Select Paint Bucket Tool, and from the top of your screen in the option bar select the gradient you just created.
Photoshop’s Options Bar is located directly below the Menu Bar and there you’ll find all the various options associated with the different tools in the Tools palette.

Click one time on your background layer. Your software layout will look like this.

1 Create a gorgeous website background 590x643

Now i will use some pre-made buttons from our Web Graphics pack.

2 Use Premade website buttons with 3D look

If you join our membership you will be able to download also a huge set with layer styles. Over 16.000 Photoshop layer styles. All these tools combined will help you to design very fast. For example with just a few mouse click you can change the look of the buttons, and adobe to your color needs.
I will create a new shape where we will create a slide show. The shape was made with Rectangle tool.

3 Create a slideshow 590x362

For this white shape i will add some layer styles. To add layer styles to any shape or layer it is very simple: go to Layer > layer style.

4 Add the following layer styles for this slideshow 590x466

5 Add layer styles to the slideshow shape 590x466

7 Choose gradients colors

7 Choose gradients colors1

8 Choose stroke settings 590x466

My new slideshow will look like in the following image.

9 Final slideshow look

Near this ” powered jQuery” Slide show i will create our logo

10 Create a text logo with pressed layer styles

I recommend you to use our 3D Creator , which allows you to change any shape into a nice 3D shape. In our case you can create a nice 3D logo, and place it near your text logo.
For this text logo i have used a pressed layer styles. You can achieve the same effect as mine if you use the following layer styles

11 pressed layer styles 590x466

12 Pressed layer styles used to creaet the logo 590x466

13 Gradient used to create the pressed layer style sin photshop 590x466

Above your slide show you can create a simple horizontal text menu. I have used two colors because under the white txt button i will create a shape.

14 add a horizontal text menu

I will enable the Grid ( press on CMD + ‘ ) or go to View > Show > Grid, and then with pen tool create the following shape.

15 With Pe tool create an unusual button

On your slide show add a image. i have used my own wallpaper because i am an Apple fan.

16 Add a nice mac related wallpaper on your jquery powered slide show

Under your logo write down a nice slogan. Mine is not so nice but you got the idea.

17 Add a nice slogan on the header of the layout

On each website layout you will create try to add as many details as you an. Sometimes some simple lines can change the look of your layout, that’s why i will use Line Tool to create two thin lines. Please note that you need to use two different colors. You can take the color codes from the next image.

18 With line tool add two thin 1 pixel lines 590x266

As you can see i will add these lines also under the slide show, in the body of the layout. In the same time i will add some text with Horizontal Type Tool

19 add details on your website using Line Tool 590x320

Further i will create some image place holders, and i will write further text.

20 Write soem text on your background 590x274

The layer styles to create the small image place holder you will find in the next 3 images

21 Layer styles to create the image border 590x466

22 image border color overlay 590x466

23 Stroke for image border 590x466

Now we will work on the footer of the layout. Here i will add some icons, text and Horizontal Lines
If you don’t like the icons i have used you can choose some icons from our pack: Vector icons
Or check our blog to see the next updates

24 Add 1 pixel lines on your website footer

On the right side of the footer i will add more text and the same details: the horizontal lines

25 Repeat the process until you like the end result

This is my final result.

26 Final result software layout 590x643

If you don’t know how to create a 3D box then please go to 3D Software Box, and view the video to see how easy is to create unique 3D boxes in Adobe photoshop.

Anyway this step is optional in this tutorial, and you can use any other 3D software you have already.

final

For this tutorial you will need to create a new document with the following size: 1100 pixels x 1250 pixels.
With Paint Bucket Tool fill your background layer with the following #d8d8d8

1 Add a grey color on your background

Duplicate the Background layer and then go to Fill > Noise > Add noise. Use the following settings:

2 Add noise for your grey background

On the top side of the background layer i will create a new shape with Rectangle Tool

3 Create a shape on the header of the website

For this shape I will add the following layer styles.

4 Indented layer styles 590x466

5 Pressed layer styles 590x466

6 Embossed layer styles 590x466

You can see on the following image the result. As you can see this layer style has an indented look. Try to save this preset because you will need later in this tutorial. In case you want more layer styles we have a huge pack with over 16,000 Photoshop Layer styles.

7 Full size header

On the top of the website I will create another shape with Rounded Rectangle Tool. I will use the same pressed layer style settings.

8 Create a horizontal pressed menu

The next step is to add some lines with pixel tool. I will set the line weight to 1 pixel. You can make this setting after you select the Line Tool, and then you will find the value on the Option bar.

9 Add pixel lines on the top of the header

I will continue working on the horizontal menu. Here I will create a new shape with Rounded Rectangle Tool. After you use this tool, right click on the layer inside your layer palette, and choose Rasterize Shape.
Delete the top part of the shape with Eraser tool, or you can create a selection with rectangular marquee tool, and the hit the Delete key on your keyboard ( Clear )

10 Create a distinct orange button

Please use the following layer styles

21 layer styles for orange button 590x466

22 Style for button 590x466

23 Gradient used to create the orange button

24 Stroke setting for orange button 590x466

With pen tool create the following shape. I will use this shape to create a nice shadow under this button in my following steps.

11 Create a dark shape

I will drag the layer under the orange button.

12 Drag the shape under the ornage button

Now you need to lower the opacity for this shape to 10-15 %. Another tip is rasterize the shape ( right click on the layer inside your layer palette ), and then you can erase the shape with a smooth round brush.

13 Ornage button with dark shadow

On the top of the layout I will create an area where you can add very important texts. These type of text which are very visible are very important because you can transform a normal usual in a customer.

14 Create a slogan 590x283

As you can see I have used the same pressed layer style, and with horizontal type tool I wrote some text. I will create also a text logo. You can create also a 3D logo with the help of our 3D generator

15 Add a logo on your layout

In the middle of the layout I will create 4 boxes with Rounded rectangle tool, and I will add the same pressed layer style I have used over and over in this tutorial.

16 Crete image placeholder for software boxes 590x670

Here i will add the 3D software boxes created with 3D Software Box Creator

17 Add images with 3D software boxes

Under each area i will add some text with Horizontal Type tool

18 Write text under 3d software boxes 590x346

After you add the text, you will need to write some minus signs with Horizontal Type Tool.

19 Add dashed lines on your web layout

The last step is to fill the bottom part of the shape with text and some other simple elements. Please take a look on the following image to see the full result.
